Equipment and endpoints at the New Zealand Eye Research Centre

The first question a sponsor asks a trial site is what it can measure, and how repeatably. This page lists the instruments at the New Zealand Eye Research Centre (NZERC) in Hamilton by the endpoint each one supports.

Axial length and ocular biometry

Axial length is the primary structural endpoint in myopia trials. Having three optical biometers on site allows a study to fix one instrument for every visit and keeps a backup available.

Posterior segment and choroid

• Heidelberg Spectralis OCT (full suite)
• Posterior imaging
• Choroidal thickness and choroidal vascularity index measurement — see our CVI page

Cornea and anterior segment

• Medmont Meridia corneal topography
• Heidelberg Anterion anterior segment tomography
• Tomey EM-4000 specular microscopy (endothelial cell counts)
• Slit lamp biomicroscopy with anterior imaging and fluorescein imaging

These support contact lens, orthokeratology, keratoconus and corneal safety endpoints.

Refraction and visual function

• Automated phoropters
• Nidek Tonoref II autorefraction and tonometry
• Good-Lite ESC 2000 standardised vision testing charts
• Frequency doubling technology visual fields

Tear film and ocular surface diagnostics

• Meibography
• Tear osmolarity
• Tear break-up time (TBUT) and non-invasive break-up time (NIBUT)

Dry eye treatment devices

• Intense pulsed light (E-Eye)
• LipiFlow vectored thermal pulsation
• Low level light therapy
• Blephasteam
